Busy Day-Mamou, Eunice and Maurice, Louisiana

We had a marathon kind of day Saturday.  We started at 7 a.m. driving to Mamou to the infamous Fred’s Lounge to listen to their Cajun Jam Session that is broadcast live on KVPI 1050 AM radio since 1962.  We were disappointed.

The place is small and you have to get there by 8:30 to get a seat before they go on the air at 9 a.m.  Our group favored drinking Bloody Marys but an early morning beer was also in the offering. Small 8 oz. ones were $4 but most got the double for $8.

The music was great, very professional sounding.  We danced and enjoyed the locals especially meeting Tante Sue who took over for Fred after his passing.

Tante Sue (Aunt) came around greeting people and making sure they signed “the book”.  You write your name and where you are from. They give out a gift basket to the folks who came the furthest in Louisiana, the USA and foreign country.

About 9:30 we left and drove a couple of blocks to Charlie’s Meat Market for a snack. You can see the big bowl of steamed boudin, other meat selections in the case, 1/4 pound bag of cracklings and Jim and Sheila having a taste of boudin.

Then we stopped at Lakeview RV Park where Jay and Vicki moved to Friday to get something for their dog.  We wanted to check out the park.  At monthly rates of $400 per month it’s a possible place to stay in the future. It’s very pretty with tall trees, a lake and it was very quiet.

Then it was off to Eunice to Savoy Music Center for their Saturday 9-noon jam session.  This sign tells the story.

It was inspirational to see youngsters as young as 6 playing the triangle and teenagers playing accordion and guitars sitting among 80 year old folks.  There wasn’t any amplification so the sound was “old school”, soft, mellow and soothing.  The audience sat behind them.

The Savoy offers free refreshments of boudin, cracklings, coffee and a shot of Jim Beam.

This is the place to buy all kinds of Cajun music CD’s and look at those washboards…little ones are cute.

Around noon we left and drove to Maurice and had lunch one last time at The Villager’s CafĂ©.  We enjoyed a shrimp po’boy while others had shrimp salad and beignets.  We all enjoyed the potato and sweet potato fries.

Then as if all these activities weren’t enough, we stopped by Touchet’s for one more Cajun jam session.

That was enough for the day for me. I didn’t go to happy hour but put up my legs in my recliner and later went to bed early.  Oh, but what a wonderful full day it had been….full with music, food and friends.  It doesn’t get any better than this!!!!!!!

Sunday we bid goodbye to everyone at Betty’s RV Park and headed out towards Florida. Last night we stayed at Davis Bayou Campground in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, which is a favorite of ours.  Today we drive to Pensacola for two weeks.  See you there……..

Remember, you are loved.

  2. Because of buying a house in Florida, we will not get to LA this year. We are not giving up Rving, just getting a home base. We love LA and hope to get back soon. Safe travels.
