Change in Summer Plans

As many of you know, Jim and I have spent our summers in South Fork, Colorado, as area managers for seven national forest campgrounds in the Rio Grande National Forest, working for concessionaires, American Land and Leisure (AL&L).

We recently found out that the Rio Grande National Forest will be operated by a different concessionaire.  So we have accepted the position of Regional Managers for Colorado with AL&L.  We will be working out of Stillwater Campground about eight miles from Granby, Colorado, west of the Boulder/Golden area.

We will leave Abbeville a week early to attend a regional managers meeting in Orem, Utah, the first of April. We really didn’t want to drive the rig all the way to Utah (still snowing there this week). We’ll drive to the Albuquerque area, leave our rig and Poncho with friends and fly to Salt Lake City for four days.

When we return we’ll visit with our daughters, grandchildren and hopefully, a new great granddaughter for a couple of days and then drive up to Alamosa, Colorado, for the rest of the month.

Jim will attend a class to renew his water testing certification in Pueblo for a couple of days early May and then we’ll drive to northern Colorado for the summer.

We are sad we’ll miss seeing many of our repeat campers this summer in South Fork. Many have become personal friends after seven years of camphosting. We’re also sad not to see how Big Meadows Campground renovations came out, as it will reopened this summer.  Maybe some of you will decide to come visit us at Stillwater Campground….we’d love to see familiar faces.

Remember, you are loved.

  1. Wow, South Fork is gonna miss you guys. I'll take some pictures of Big Meadows when I get back there. When I lived in Steamboat, I used to drive through Granby a lot on Hwy 40. Not much there back then other than the big lake, lots of ranches and the western approach to Rocky Mtn NP.

    1. Please do take photos of Big Meadows as I'd like to see what it ends up looking like. We walked through it the end of last summer and there is a lot of tall, tall weeds covering the campsites.

    2. Never met you guys but enjoyed reading your blog from the South Fork area as that was like home away from home for me for over 20 years. I loved Big Meadows & the whole area. Will miss seeing & hearing about it. Hopefully somebody else will carry on with pics & stories from there. Enjoy the new campground.

  3. We've camped at Stillwater before in our tent trailer. It is a beautiful campground, you will like it. The main attraction is the spillway. You will see lots of fishermen casting their lines into the rushing water when they open the spillway in the evenings. The only thing that we had to be careful of was people preying on children there. Especially men. Had a hummingbird get trapped in our screen room and lit on my hand to rest before flying off. It was a great experiance, the kids loved it.

  4. Wow! What an unexpected surprise. But, I know you both will enjoy your new campground and your co-workers and campers will cherish wonderful memories of their vacation simply because they spent it with both of you. I'll look forward to your summer reports.

    1. We're hoping he'll still have time to do some fishing. We'll be staying right on a lake so hopefully he can at the end of the day.
