Trip down Highway 90-Mississippi and Po'boys

Thursday we all took a trip from Gautier to Bay St. Louis down Highway 90.  Sure could see the continued efforts to clean up the oil spill.

I didn’t take many photos as I have photos from previous trips.  The devastation is still very apparent. Empty lots all facing the Gulf.  It was good to see many new homes that have been built and more in the process.  Boy, their insurance rates must be high!

We checked out Buccaneer State Park in Waveland/Biloxi area as a possible place to stay after Gautier.  We’re sure glad we looked at it because we all voted “NO”. It was destroyed during Katrina and is being rebuilt and is open, but it’s pretty new and no one is camping there. Plus the entry road is rough and ready for repaving, plus it is closed to normal traffic.  And at $24 a night it was a deal breaker.

But we got a great tip from the attendant about a place to eat.  We found Dempsey’s in nearby Bay St. Louis and ordered the daily special of cup of gumbo and half a po’ boy sandwich for $8.95.  The bread was luscious and the shrimp and/or oyster sandwiches we had were wonderful. The sandwich was 8 inches long….and that was considered a half!

Lunch was so filling that none of us were hungry for dinner, so we just had happy hour instead!!!

Do you know how Po’boys got it’s name?  Back in 1929 there was a transit strike in New Orleans.  Two brothers, Clovis and Benjamin Martin, owned a local coffee stand. They supported the strikers and served them a sandwich on Italian bread with gravy and bits of ends from roast beef or potatoes and gravy.  Every time one of the strikers came to the back door for a sandwich one of the brothers would announce the arrival of “another poor boy” to serve.  Thus it got its name.  Pretty interesting stuff.
