Visit to Creede

Every year we go up to Creede to visit the site where Jim’s parent’s ashes are scattered.  So last Friday we took that drive and we sure picked a beautiful day to do it.

Going back to Alamosa we decided to stop and look at Beaver Creek Reservoir to see how low the water level was this year.

On the way out of town we stopped to see Rich

and Terri Deacon, great buddies and managers of the South Fork Campground.  We caught them racking up leaves in preparation to opening May 1st.

Our arrival necessitated a break and a chat.

Dinner at the Bistro

We had a delightful dinner with Kevin Rogers and his family.  Kevin is the owner and worked with Jim at Rogers Family Mortuary and they have remained friends.

We ate the Bistro Rialto here in Alamosa.  The restaurant is housed in what use to be the Rialto Theatre, which burned years ago.  The back end was demolished but the front was able to be saved and this is where the Bistro was built.

The entry is very tastefully done with photographs of famous Italian movie stars, known Italian buildings and scenery.  Very attractive.

I really like the interior….how they left some of the building’s original brick exposed. This sitting area is small and intimate with tables and booths.  There is also a larger dining area for groups across the entryway.

The food was wonderful as always.  The pizza, calzones and lasagna are excellent.  As is the pistachio ice cream.

We always like to visit with Kevin and Emma who enjoy camping and the outdoors.

Recent Knitted Projects

I wanted to knit a hooded cowl in wool for my friend, Salai, who goes out and feeds her animals during the –35 degree (yes, minus 35 degrees) weather of Alamosa in the winter. I bought the yarn in Harlingen, TX while shopping with Paula and Jean.  Here’s what I came up with. She liked it!

Salai and I have birthdays a day apart, so we usually meet in July and give each other gifts.  Since I won’t be in this area this summer Salai surprised me with a ball winder for my birthday gift.  She also brought over a swift I asked her to buy for me through her connections. 

 

I was so excited I ended up balling up 14 hanks of yarn.  Now I’m ready for a few new projects.

I ordered some yarn from Jimmy Beans Wool for a project for another friend.  When the yarn arrived I was surprised to see the package actually was imprinted with a pattern for a scarf!  What a great marketing idea.  I’ll definitely be ordering from them again.

Here’s the yarn I received….isn’t it beautiful?  I love the colorway.  Hay, Merlene, this is the start of your shrug.

I also finished another project from yarn I bought with Paula and Jean in Harlingen.  It’s a shawl but with wristlets so the shawl stays on your shoulders. Thanks, Paula, for suggesting the addition of the red yarn periodically.  I like the effect. This one is for me. It’s warm but easy to drive in or use the computer.  Using all knit stitch it is a fast project … I knitted while watching TV at night.

Movie “42”–Wow, Wow, Wow

Jim and I went to see the 5:15 p.m. showing of the movie “42” about Jackie Robinson.  All I can say is “Wow”.  What a meaningful and inspiring movie. Great way to show the youngsters how it use to be and the hardships Mr. Robinson went through. 

Jim and I maybe own eight movies.  There just aren’t that many movies we enjoy enough to see more than once.  Some we do own are Dave, The Notebook, American President, Field of Dreams and Mama Mia.

When “42” comes out on DVD….we WILL be buying it. 

If you haven’t seen this movie yet, do yourself a favor and go see it.

Calvillo’s

Friday Jim’s brother, Don, called and asked if we wanted to go out to dinner…..well, yah, of course, we’re always ready to go out to eat! 

After several texts back and forth between Jim and Don (why don’t they just call each other?) they decided on Calvillo’s Mexican Restaurant here in Alamosa, CO.

We’ve eaten here many times before but always opted for their grand buffet.  This time we picked meals from the menu so we wouldn’t over eat.

Calvillo’s has done some updating since last year with an new entrance, some interior renovations and the wait staff now use ear plugs and walkie talkies….innovative.

We Go Along

We’ve been catching up with friends since we’ve been back in Alamosa.    

Here’s Salai, my knitting buddy.  We always go out to lunch at May Wa.

 

 

 

Since it was cold I had a huge bowl of Jampong, a spicy soup with noodles, tofu and lots of veggies.

Last Tuesday we met with long time friends, Beth and Orville, who were also area managers in the Rio Grand National Forest.  The four of us went through all the paperwork and tools we stored the end of last summer.  When we were through we went back to Ramon’s in South Fork for lunch.

Jim has been making breakfast most mornings.  Bacon and eggs for him, but he makes me a green chile omelet.

                  

It has been cold, cold, cold here this spring.  Our electric heater has been going 24/7 for several days now.  We’ve even had snow a few times. We have more cold weather on the way.  I had to go out and buy warmer clothes to cope. 

 

Even Poncho takes to hiding under the blankets….laying his head on his own personal pillow…cute.

 

And I’ll close with this picture of Mt. Blanca taken yesterday from down the road a bit.  Gaze at it for a while and quiet your mind for a moment.

Cold, cold, cold

Woke this morning to 11*, two inches of snow outside and frozen pipes in our RV!!!!  It’s April 18….it’s Spring….it’s suppose to be warmer than this!!!!

Had the electric heater on and the propane brick heater going, but went ahead and turned on the furnace to get the under-belly warm and hopefully the pipes.  After about two hours the water broke through and all was well.

 

I went to the library and had to navigate the icy streets and sidewalks.  But I got to see Salai and look at a new knitted hat book she just got in.  It has some very different patterns.

We’ve been busy going through our campgrounds’ storage items, sorting what to throw, what to take up North with us, and what is to go to Utah.

I’m also preparing for training our area managers prior to the opening of our campgrounds in the Arapaho National Forest.

But mostly I am staying inside and trying to stay WARM!!!!!

Welcome Zoey

Our grandson and his wife brought us our new great-granddaughter, Zoey.  Lovely photo they took.

I also really like this photo of Zoey with her Dad, our grandson, Kenneth. He had never held any baby before he held his daughter....very special.

This photo is special to me....our daughter, Christine, holding her granddaughter.

Yes, we are very proud great-grandparents and hopefully we'll get to see Zoey in person soon.

Trip to South Fork

We drove up to South Fork to visit Rich and Terri Deacon who manage the South Fork Campground.  They were moving in for the summer,  setting up their office and cleaning up the campsites from the winter debris.

We decided to have lunch at a new restaurant in South Fork called Ramon's.  For Alamosans, Ramon's took the place of the Swiss Chalet. It is definitely worth the trip to South Fork to enjoy the fare Ramon's has to offer.

The decor is upscale and sophisticated but with very reasonable prices.

Here is the server's tray with our meals.  The food was very tasty but not very spicy...no kick.

Here is my shrimp dish with sauteed onions and green peppers in a savory sauce.  The homemade refried beans were great.  We will definitely return.

On the way home we saw a herd of buffaloes enjoying the mild weather.

It was so nice to see Rich and Terri again.  We are sad we will not be seeing them much this summer.  Rich has such a good sense of humor and he had us in stitches relaying stories of his winter job of delivering propane in the area.  There were a lot of episodes with animals from over welcoming Rottweilers to charging chickens...a lot of chicken stories.
