Head snapping, head snapping time…

That’s shrimp head snapping, it is! We went to the shrimp shanties down the street in Westwego, LA to a group of outdoor stalls each carrying shrimp right off the shrimp boat dock.  Oh, what a sight seeing coolers full of shrimp, each with different sizes from 10-15s to little salad shrimp size.  The shrimp boats dock at 6 a.m. and the stalls open at 8 a.m. every day.  You can’t get much fresher than that.

10-15 count only $5.50 a pound!

All the shrimps have to be sold with the heads on at the shrimp stalls, don’t know why, but that is what Becky told us.  So we had to go home and snap all the heads off before we froze them, or the sharp parts of the heads would pierce the plastic bags.  So Jim and I spent some time snapping heads!

We couldn’t believe how cheap the shrimp were $3.50 a pound for 20-25 count per pound.  We usually pay $7-8 per pound for frozen shrimp.  And those huge 10-15 counts at only $5.50 a pound are a real steal.

The night before we all got together and ate four pounds of shrimp.  We boiled up two pounds and made shrimp scampi our of the other two pounds.  OMG, they were great tasting!!!

So after we put up our shrimp in the freezer we went over to the Mossman’s where we prepared a feast.  The Mossman’s friend, Pete, had given them a recipe for Coconut Shrimp that Jim M. had been wanting to try for sometime, but Linda didn’t like Coconut Shrimp (so she thought) so he never made it.  Jim C. and Terri snapped shrimp heads and butterflied all the shrimp…Jim and Linda bought us four more pounds to eat tonight also. Thank you, Jim M. for letting me take these photos off your blog as I forgot to bring my camera.

The plan was to make the two pounds of 10-15 count into Coconut Shrimp and the 20-25 count shrimp into fried shrimp.

Coconut shrimp 3
We started off with he Coconut Shrimp and liked it so much…it was really delicious, lightly battered and tender…we tried a little fried, but decided we wanted more Coconut Shrimp.
Pineapple chutney
Pete had sent along an Pineapple Chutney that we all really fell in love with…it would have made a sneaker taste good….it was a sweet, sour, spicy taste that was great. Can’t wait to try it on chicken or even a piece of toast!!!

What a great meal!!!  We had a great time.  We will be back after our Betty’s RV Park stay as the weather was so bad we didn’t get to go to New Orleans to sightsee. You can beat your booties we will stop at the shrimp stalls when we return.

Remember, you are loved.
